José Neves — a Portuguese entrepreneur who had previously run a luxury footwear brand — founded Farfetch in Porto in 2007. His insight was structural: rather than buying and warehousing luxury goods himself (the traditional retail model), he would create a platform connecting independent luxury boutiques around the world directly with customers. A boutique in Milan could list its inventory on Farfetch and sell to a customer in Tokyo, with Farfetch handling logistics and payment. This 'marketplace' model was new in luxury.
Farfetch grew rapidly to become the world's largest luxury fashion platform, connecting over 3,500 brands and boutiques with customers in more than 190 countries. The platform carries everything from Hermès and Chanel to emerging designers — and crucially, offers access to boutique inventory that would be impossible to find in any single city. A customer in Oslo could browse the stock of a Milanese boutique and receive it within days. The company went public on the NYSE in 2018, valued at approximately $6 billion.
Farfetch also acquired physical retail assets: Browns — the legendary London boutique that discovered Alexander McQueen — became part of Farfetch in 2015. The New Guards Group, which owns Off-White and other streetwear brands, was acquired in 2019. These moves signalled ambition beyond being purely a platform. The company also developed Farfetch Platform Solutions, a white-label e-commerce service sold to luxury brands and retailers.
After reporting significant losses, Farfetch announced a restructuring in late 2023 and was acquired by South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang in early 2024. The platform continues to operate, though the long-term strategic direction under Coupang ownership continues to evolve. The core marketplace — connecting boutiques with global customers — remains the platform's central proposition.
Farfetch offers one of the widest selections of luxury fashion available anywhere online. The platform is particularly strong for designer pieces from boutiques that don't ship internationally themselves, rare vintage finds, and streetwear. Authentication services and a pre-owned luxury section (Second Life) complement the new inventory. Personal shopping and concierge services are available for top clients.
