History
Charles Henry Harrod opened a small grocery shop in Knightsbridge in 1834, initially specialising in tea. His son Charles Digby Harrod transformed the business into a department store by the 1880s, serving an affluent clientele in one of London's most fashionable neighbourhoods. In 1883, a devastating fire destroyed the building just before Christmas — but Harrod personally fulfilled every order, and the loyalty this generated transformed public trust in the brand. The iconic terracotta building that stands today was completed in 1905. In 2010, Harrods was sold by the Al Fayed family to Qatar Holdings for £1.5 billion.
The Store
Harrods occupies 90,000 square metres of floor space across seven floors in the Knightsbridge building, making it one of the largest department stores in the world. The store is divided into more than 300 departments covering fashion, beauty, food and wine, homeware, technology, jewellery and watches. The Food Halls — with their Art Nouveau tiled walls and extraordinary selection of foods from around the world — are among London's most visited attractions in their own right. The Egyptian-themed escalators connecting floors are an architectural landmark.
Luxury Fashion & Beauty
Harrods carries the world's leading luxury fashion brands across dedicated mono-brand spaces and curated multi-brand floors. Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Valentino and Brunello Cucinelli all have significant presences. The beauty floors carry La Mer, Sisley, Tom Ford Beauty, Creed and virtually every prestige skincare and fragrance brand of note. The fine jewellery and watch floors carry Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, among many others.
