La Mer
From the depths of the sea, a miracle.

The Origin

The story of La Mer begins not in a beauty laboratory but in the aftermath of a disaster. In the 1950s and 1960s, Dr. Max Huber — an aerospace physicist working for NASA in California — suffered severe chemical burns in a laboratory explosion. Conventional medicine offered little relief for his scarred skin. Determined to heal himself through science, Huber spent over a decade conducting more than 6,000 experiments in his home laboratory, inspired by the regenerative properties of giant sea kelp harvested from the Pacific coast.

The Miracle Broth

After 12 years of experimentation, Dr. Huber developed what he called the Miracle Broth — a proprietary ferment of giant sea kelp, combined with vitamins, minerals and other sea-derived nutrients, subjected to months of bio-fermentation and exposure to precisely calibrated light and sound waves to maximise its cellular energy. Applied daily, it transformed his skin beyond what any existing treatment had achieved. He called it Crème de la Mer — Cream of the Sea. Huber quietly shared it with friends and colleagues; word spread through California's medical and scientific community.

The Acquisition

Huber died in 1991, but his formula survived him. In 1995, the Estée Lauder Companies acquired La Mer, recognising in the brand's extraordinary story — and the genuine efficacy of its formula — an opportunity to define a new tier of luxury skincare. Estée Lauder expanded distribution, invested in the science behind the Miracle Broth, and positioned La Mer at the absolute pinnacle of the prestige skincare market. Today La Mer generates over $1 billion in annual revenue — extraordinary for a brand whose entire range is built on the foundation of a single scientist's private experiment.

The Range

The Miracle Broth is the foundation of every La Mer product. The hero product, Crème de la Mer, comes in several textures — the original ultra-rich cream, the Moisturizing Soft Cream for lighter coverage, the Moisturizing Lotion and the Moisturizing Gel Cream. Beyond moisturisers, the range spans serums (The Concentrate), eye treatments, cleansers, toners, body products and limited-edition collections. Each product undergoes clinical testing to verify the Miracle Broth's efficacy.

Prices

La Mer's entry point is the Cleansing Foam at approximately $90 for 125ml. The iconic Crème de la Mer begins at approximately $195 for 30ml and $2,000+ for the largest sizes. The Concentrate serum starts around $290. La Mer is available at its own counters in major department stores and at cremedelamer.com — it is one of the few luxury skincare brands whose own website is a primary channel.
