Tom Ford Beauty
Confidence is the most seductive thing.

History

Tom Ford launched his eponymous beauty brand in 2005, two years after leaving Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. In a beauty industry dominated by either mass-market brands or heritage houses, Ford introduced a new category: luxury beauty with the sensibility of a fashion house, but with the founder himself as the creative director and face. The brand launched with fragrances first — the Private Blend collection — before expanding into skincare and cosmetics.

Private Blend Fragrances

The Private Blend line was Tom Ford's opening statement: a collection of niche fragrances drawing on the world's finest raw materials — oud from the Middle East, rare musks, Italian bergamot, Moroccan rose — presented in identical black bottles with a sense of deliberate mystery. Scents like Black Orchid, Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Vanille, and Oud Wood became reference points in the fragrance world, cited by professionals and enthusiasts as defining examples of modern luxury. The collection now spans over 60 scents across several sub-lines.

Cosmetics & Skincare

Tom Ford Beauty's cosmetics brought the designer's aesthetic — extreme sensuality, precision, and a matte black and gold visual language — to lip colour, eyeshadow, and foundation. The Lip Color range is among the most discussed in luxury cosmetics. The skincare range, Skin Illuminating Powder Duo and Research Serum, applies the same premium positioning to skincare. Everything is designed to feel like a luxury object before it is used. In 2023, the Estée Lauder Companies acquired the Tom Ford brand outright for approximately $2.8 billion.

Oud Wood & Black Orchid

Two fragrances above all have come to define Tom Ford Beauty globally. Oud Wood (2007) brought the Middle Eastern oud note to a mainstream Western luxury audience with a warmth and accessibility that transformed the fragrance market. Black Orchid (2006) — a rich, dark floral — became a signature scent associated with confidence and nocturnal glamour. Both are now classics of the modern perfume canon.

Prices

Tom Ford Beauty entry products — eye and lip pencils, small fragrance sizes — begin around $50–60. The Lip Color retails from approximately $65. Private Blend fragrances begin at approximately $225 for 50ml and reach $1,200+ for large format bottles. Skincare serums range from $200–500. Products are available at tomford.com, Sephora, Harrods, Selfridges and Neiman Marcus.
