Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded their store in New York City in 1837, initially selling stationery and fancy goods. Within a decade, Tiffany had pivoted decisively to fine jewellery and silver, adopting the distinctive robin's-egg blue that would become one of the most recognisable colours in luxury. The Tiffany Blue Box has been presented with every purchase since the very beginning — Charles Tiffany famously declared that no Tiffany Blue Box could be purchased separately; it could only be obtained with the purchase of a Tiffany creation.
In 1886, Charles Tiffany revolutionised the engagement ring with the introduction of the Tiffany Setting: a six-prong solitaire that elevated the diamond off the band, allowing light to enter from every angle. Before this design, diamonds in engagement rings were typically set flush against the metal. The Tiffany Setting changed the engagement ring category permanently — the vast majority of solitaire engagement rings sold worldwide today are descendants of this design.
Tiffany Blue (Pantone 1837, named for the founding year) is among the most powerful brand colours in history, trademarked and produced exclusively by Pantone for Tiffany — it cannot be purchased or licensed by any other company. The colour entered global cultural consciousness through Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), in which Audrey Hepburn gazes into the Fifth Avenue window. In 2021, Tiffany acquired by LVMH for $15.8 billion — the largest luxury acquisition in history at that time.
Tiffany's core collections include the T collection (bold geometric designs), Return to Tiffany (the iconic heart tag), Tiffany Soleste (floral diamond settings), and the Schlumberger high jewellery works of designer Jean Schlumberger, who joined the house in 1956 and created some of the most celebrated jewellery of the 20th century. The Tiffany Yellow Diamond — 128.54 carats, one of the finest yellow diamonds ever found — has been a centrepiece of the house since 1878.
Tiffany offers the most accessible entry point of the major American jewellery houses. Sterling silver pieces — Return to Tiffany charms, Simple Chain necklaces — begin around $200. Gold and diamond collections typically start from $2,000–$5,000. The Tiffany Setting engagement ring begins at approximately $3,000 for a 0.18 carat stone and scales to six figures for exceptional diamonds. High jewellery commissions are entirely bespoke.
